Sodium-ion Battery

The sodium-ion battery (NIB or SIB) is a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions (Na+) as its charge carriers. In some cases, its working principle and cell construction are similar to those of lithium-ion battery (LIB) types, but it replaces lithium with sodium as the cathode material, which belongs to the same group in the periodic table as lithium and thus has similar chemical properties.

On July 23, Chuanyi Science and Technology announced that Jiangsu Chuanyi Nadian Technology Co., Ltd., a holding subsidiary of the company, recently entered the supply chain of a well-known automobile manufacturer and received an order from a subsidiary of the company, field of sodium-ion batteries.

Compared with the current mainstream power batteries, the outstanding advantages of sodium-ion batteries are low cost and low temperature performance.

In terms of cost, sodium carbonate is used as the sodium source for the anode material of sodium-ion batteries, and the cost of sodium carbonate is about 2,000 RMB/ton. Compared with the current battery-grade lithium carbonate of over 200,000 RMB/ton, it still has a significant cost advantage. .

In terms of low-temperature performance, sodium batteries can still maintain a discharge retention rate of more than 90% at – 20°C. Compared with the current mainstream lithium iron phosphate batteries, they can demonstrate their differentiated advantages in winter and temperate regions.

In addition, due to the advantages of sodium batteries, the energy storage market has opened up market growth space for sodium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion batteries have a wider operating temperature, and their performance is more compatible with energy storage application scenarios. It is also more suitable for energy storage system applications in terms of economy and safety.

As one of the current main battery technology routes, the construction of the upstream and downstream of the sodium-ion battery industry chain is advancing rapidly.
